About Hidayat Adams

Teacher & Author

My Story

Hidayat Adams was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa in the suburb of Grassy Park. At an early age, he fell in love with reading, especially comic books and mystery novels such as The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. His love for reading and books eventually led him to the path of becoming an English teacher, a career he feels he was born to follow. As he so often quips, “I was born to teach, as my name means ‘guidance’ or ‘instruction’.”

Hidayat started his teaching career at Livingstone High School where he taught for one year, then moved on to teach for the next eight years at Grassy Park High school. However, the bulk of his teaching career was spent in Muscat, Oman where he taught English to Grades 6 to 12 from August 2002 until May 2015. He is currently working as an English Academic Support Lecturer at the College of Cape Town.

Hidayat lives alone and is a confirmed bachelor. “I wasn’t made to share my space or life with someone else; I’m just not wired for that. Although I love people and I have many good and a few close friends, I tend to start getting restless once visitors stay for longer than two hours in my presence. I guess my nature is that of the social introvert, a true oxymoron if ever there were one. People enjoy my company and I theirs, but I prefer my own company the most.”
